District News Articles

  2. On the evening of June 26, 2014, Platte Canyon Water and Sanitation District operations personnel (Bow Mar Water and Sanitation District’s contracted maintenance provider) responded to several calls reporting a significant water main failure at S. Sheridan Blvd. and W. Tufts Ave.  Operations personnel arrived within twenty minutes of the first call and immediately isolated the damaged section of the water main, halting the flow of water fifteen minutes later.

Crews exposed the 60-year old 10-inch Cast Iron Pipe (CIP) and discovered a 8-foot long break caused by electrolysis corrosion.  A ten foot section of the pipe was cut out and replaced with Polyvinyl Chloride pipe (PVC).  Water was restored to the affected residents early in the morning of June 27, 2014.

Due to this type of failure a significant amount of water escaped causing street and private property damage.  The District’s insurance company has been in contact with the homeowners of these affected properties.

    Water Main Replacement Schedule

Although the majority of the District’s infrastructure remains within its expected useful life, electrolysis caused corrosion and normal aging and deterioration of some facilities have caused them to be in need of rehabilitation or replacement.  In 1986, Bow Mar implemented a systematic rehabilitation and replacement program (Capital Master Plan).  The Capital Master Plan provides a process for scheduling and conducting necessary system improvements in a timely and cost effective manner and is updated and enhanced each year.  It includes a detailed, objective evaluation process by which every water main that has experienced at least one failure is analyzed and rated on several criteria factors (i.e. age of pipe, type of pipe, number of failures per segment of pipe, fire flows, etc.).  Approximately 75-80% of the water mains in Bow Mar have been replaced since the inception of the Capital Master Plan in 1986.

At the July 9, 2014 Board meeting, the Board of Directors authorized design engineering for the replacement of the water pipe in S. Sheridan Blvd. between Longhorn and Wagontrail.  It is expected to have a design by the end of August, 2014 with construction beginning in 2015.
